Jamkhed is the story of people - of disenfranchised men and women, outside the mainstream of society, who have gained the self-esteem and self-confidence necessary to determine their own lives. It is also the story of the development of a sustainable community-based primary health care program in one of the poorest parts of India. The book describes how poor, illiterate men and women have radically changed the health of the villages they inhibit by the process of discovering new skills and knowledge, and the sharing of values. Infant mortality, a reliable health indicator, has been reduced from 176 to 19 per 1000 births; birth rates have fallen to 18 per 1000 population. Although still poor, with meager resource, these village people have created for themselves caring and sharing communities with a much improved quality of life. They have shown that HEALTH FOR ALL can indeed become a reality, if only the professionals would allow it to be so.
It is our hope that those interested in poor and marginalized people, and in equality and justice will gain from our experiences. This book is not a learned treatise but a sharing of experiences in primary health care. We humbly share our trials and our successes in the hope that those interested may gain from them.
